EVENTS
Community
Awards & Installation Banquet:
Our showcase event, typically held before the state conference, which recognizes
those groups or citizens that have donated their time and efforts in supporting
parks and recreation in their community. Agencies in district I select a recipient
from their area for the Community Service Award, and accompany them to the
banquet. Typically, a power point presentation with narrative about the recipient
is prepared, and a plaque is presented.
This
event also honors the outgoing board of directors for district I, and installs
the new board of directors for the coming year; along with presenting the
district's Professional Award to a recreation & parks professional that
has contributed to the district and profession.
Support
Staff Luncheon:
This event is in honor of clerical and support staff in parks and recreation
agencies. The event typically includes lunch and some form of entertainment
which might include a guest speaker, comedians or music. The locations have
rotated to include places such as wineries, culinary schools, boat rides,
or a community center. In recent years, the event has been held in April to
coincide with Secretaries Day.
Summer
Recreation Leaders Workshop:
Usually held the first Saturday in June, this workshop geared for recreation
leaders and camp staff hired for summer programs. The emphasis is to teach
skills that the staff can use to provide a safe and enjoyable summer program.
Cost to attend is kept minimal, so agencies can send both full-time and part-time
staff.
Golf Tournament: Held in September, this is one of our favorite events. You don't have to be a good golfer to have a good time. Agencies from District 1, 2 & 3 submit teams or individual players who are paired up with other participants in a competitive, but fun format. A lunch and awards ceremony is held at the end of the tournament with some nice raffle prizes to take home, as well. The golf course location is usually moved around throughout the district from year-to-year for the convenience of long distance travel.
Fall
Workshop:
This annual event (usually held in October) allows attendees to sharpen their
professional skills and increase their networking opportunities. The Fall
Workshop is comprised of guest speakers touching on relevant topics and roundtable
discussions. Topics typically focus on current trends or professional competencies.
Aquatic Workshop: Typically held in May, this training for aquatic staff is designed to build teamwork and refine rescue techniques. The focus varies to train senior staff, re-certify lifeguards, introduce new aquatic trends, networking, and guest speakers. The training usually lasts a whole day in order to cover all activities.
General
Membership Meeting:
This is an opportunity for all CPRS members in District I to attend a board
meeting, and receive CPRS and district I updates. It is also a chance to change
by-laws, or make nominations for the upcoming District I board. Lunch is typically
provided, with a possible guest speaker. Typically held in November.
HSU
Visitation/Board Meeting:
This trip was initiated in January of 2002, as an opportunity to connect with
District I members in Northern California and to interact with students from
the only 4-year Recreation degree program in our district. We also presented
our district I scholarship(s) to students at Humboldt State University. We
strive to have as many board members as possible attend this overnight trip.
Roundtables:
Once a year,
the district tries to offer "roundtables" or workshops for specific sections
or program areas. In the past, this has included Administrator's, Seniors,
and Teens. The goal is to provide an opportunity for networking, sharing of
ideas & programs, and enhancing skills and knowledge by providing guest
speakers.
Conference
Social: This event is held in conjunction with the State CPRS Conference, and is hosted
by the District I president. This "cocktail party" is an opportunity to socialize
and network with other professionals in District I.
